Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe on the 4th of July!

The 4th of July is just around the corner and it can be quite stressful for our four-legged friends. The loud fireworks can send them into a panic, and the festivities can pose some potential risks. But fear not, because we've got you covered! In this blog post, we'll share some easy and effective ways to keep your dogs safe during the 4th of July. Plus, we'll throw in some awesome enrichment activities to help tire them out before the fireworks begin!

1. Create a Safe Space:

Dogs often seek comfort in small, secure spaces during stressful times. Set up a designated safe space for your pup, a room or crate where they can retreat to when the noise gets too overwhelming. Make it cozy with their favorite bed, blankets, and toys. Leave the door open so they don't feel trapped and can come and go as they please.

2. Keep Them Indoors:

It's best to keep your dog indoors during the fireworks. The loud noises and bright lights can frighten them, and they may try to escape in their panic. Securely close all windows and doors to keep them inside and to help muffle the sound. Draw the curtains to block out the flashing lights that can startle them. When your pup needs to go outside, leash them up (even in your own backyard!) and go outside with them.

3. ID Tags and Microchips:

Double-check your dog's ID tags to ensure they have your current contact information. If your pup manages to escape during the fireworks, it will be much easier for someone to return them safely to you. Microchipping is another great option for permanent identification, just make sure the contact details are up to date.

4. Calming Music and White Noise:

Playing some soothing tunes or turning on a white noise machine can help drown out the sound of fireworks. Choose classical music or calming melodies specifically designed for dogs. The gentle background noise can have a relaxing effect and help your pup feel more at ease.

5. Pre-Fireworks Sniffari:

Before the fireworks begin, take your pup out for a sniff walk or a car-ride-sniffari (windows rolled down, drive under 20 MPH). Physical and mental activity will help tire them out, making them a little less anxious during the fireworks display.

6. Stock up on Enrichment Goodies:

If your pup isn’t too overstimulated to take treats, try whipping up some yummy high-value snacks and put them in puzzles, toys or an enrichment box! We like freezing plain yogurt in a lickimat and we also love taking a cardboard box and filling it with items that our pup can shred and we sprinkle treats in there too! 7. Chat with your Veterinarian:

Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian and discuss options to help your pup during firework filled holidays.

The 4th of July can be a stressful time for our furry friends, but by following these tips, you can ensure their safety and well-being. Remember to create a safe space, keep them indoors, provide calming music, give them enrichment, and chat with your vet about ways that they can help them. With these measures in place, you'll help your pup through the fireworks!
